Letter No 8e by Mike Allott: back to directory

20 August 2004

Sir,

Stay Loyal

Jackie Ashley (I've had another think. And I still say that Blair must go, August 19) gives three reasons why the prime minister must go:

First, the Tories are now "slumped in listless fatalism".

Second, Labour needs to rediscover "free speech, its outspokenness, its arguments".

And, third, "while it is true that these two New Labour governments have achieved a great deal, a high proportion of that achievement has not come from the prime minister".

So, we take the Tories for granted? We ignore the 70% of the Labour party membership who want the prime minister to stay? And we create a new rule that says leadership qualities only matter when governments fail?
